Who can be admitted to the ICU at Sunray Hospital?
Any patient with a life-threatening or potentially life-threatening condition can be admitted — including post-operative surgical patients, those with severe cardiac events, respiratory failure, sepsis, stroke, trauma, or organ failure. Our ICU team assesses and decides admission based on clinical need and available beds. Emergency admissions are available 24/7.
Can family members visit a patient in the ICU?
Yes. We follow a structured family visitation policy — typically one or two family members per scheduled visit window. Visiting hours are set to ensure patient rest and medical care are not disrupted. Our ICU coordinator will provide your family a daily medical update and can arrange a meeting with the treating intensivist upon request.
How many doctors and nurses are assigned per ICU patient?
We maintain a 1:2 nurse-to-patient ratio at all times — meaning one critical care nurse is responsible for no more than two patients. An intensivist (ICU specialist physician) is present in the unit 24 hours a day. Specialist consultants from cardiology, nephrology, neurology and other departments are available on-call and round daily.
What is the difference between the Medical ICU and Surgical ICU?
Our Medical ICU (MICU) admits patients with non-surgical critical illnesses — such as severe pneumonia, cardiac arrest, diabetic emergencies, or drug overdose. The Surgical ICU (SICU) is dedicated to post-operative patients recovering from major surgeries who require intensive monitoring and ventilator support. Both units share the same technology and nurse-to-patient staffing ratios.
How long does a typical ICU stay last?
ICU stay duration depends entirely on the patient's diagnosis and rate of recovery. A post-operative patient may be discharged to the general ward within 24–72 hours. Patients with multi-organ dysfunction or severe infections may require 7–14 days or longer. Our team reviews every patient's discharge readiness daily and moves them to step-down care or general ward as soon as it is clinically safe.
Does Sunray ICU accept insurance and cashless admissions?
Yes. Sunray Hospital is empanelled with all major health insurance providers and TPA (Third Party Administrators). Cashless admission is available for eligible policyholders — our insurance desk is open 24/7 in the hospital lobby to assist with pre-authorisation and documentation. Please carry your insurance card and a valid photo ID at the time of admission.
What should the family bring at the time of ICU admission?
Please bring: a valid government photo ID of the patient, the patient's existing medical records and prescription history, insurance card (if applicable), a list of all current medications, and one family member's contact number for the ICU coordinator. Personal belongings inside the ICU are minimised for infection control — our team will guide you on what is permitted at the bedside.
